If networking processors such as the ones offered by Intel and IBM are going to take over the networking market, wouldn't FPGA be loosing its most lucrative market?

The most optimistic view of Intel’s IXA and IBM’s attempt at a similar offering would not affect the FPGA market anytime soon. The pressure they would bring to the ASIC arena would only hasten the transition from ASIC’s to FPGA’s. The numbers work because FPGA’s still represent only a fraction of the total ASIC unit volume.

Also, FPGA’s are being welcomed in a growing number of markets not served by network processors per se.

Reconfigurating FPGAs through software has been done for many years. I don't see how the Xilinx/Wind alliance changing anything.

The greatest virtue of FPGA’s is their ability to be reconfigured. What is new that WIND brings to the table is the ability to manage the process reliably at very high levels of API in trillions of connected devices.

It is interesting that safe management of critical resources is the central Intellectual Property bought to the table by hugely successful companies like Oracle and EMC. How much did Oracle’s intrinsic and reliable “rollback” capability contribute to its dominance of the database sector? Perhaps, WIND’s rollback of failed FPGA updates will lead WIND’s device management software to a similar premier position in the smart connected devices space.

Allen
