Kash, there are indications the P4 isn't so great at SpecInt, and that it loses by more than 10% on IPC. We'll see, sooner or later. Elmer proclaimed himself impressed with the 502 specint score, of course, so it must be good.

Cheers, Dan.

RE:"PIV launch at 1.2, 1.3

Sure if thats where they were yielding they would introduce at this level.

Clearly the PIV will suffer vs PIII in IPC by 10% or so.

But a 1.2Ghz PIV should still beat up on a 1Ghz cumine on Intel's "selected" benchmarks.

BTW, i expect the PIV to be great on some benchmarks like spec int and fp. And perhaps not so good on others.

But this has always been the case, no new architecture wins at everything."

---

Intel has already marked a 1.4 GHz P4 as 20% faster than a 1 Ghz coppermine. This from an Intel show about 1 1/2 weeks ago in Miami. This means little because I don't know what benchmarks they were using but it means A LOT because Intel says it.
Using say Toms or Anands benchmark suite, I'd expect the difference to be even less. OTOH, Intel doesn't want it to appear like they are trying to fudge the numbers too much because of the heat they are going to take.
This hardly puts a 1.2 GHz P4 even with a 1 GHz coppermine.
I'd be shocked out of my chair if Intel intros anything less than 1.4 because this is what they were demoing.

Intel in as much said the P4 was "slow" on some benchmarks.

Jim

Were do you get so much crap that you post all the time. Intel's own numbers show SPECint2000 scores are within 1% between 1.5GHz P4 and 1.13GHz PIII.
