WR Hambrecht also bolstered its estimates for business-to-business Web site hub VerticalNet (VERT: Research, Estimates) after the company reported a third-quarter loss of 20 cents a share, lighter than the 29 cents a share analysts expected.

Hambrecht narrowed its 2000 loss estimate to 76 cents a share from an 86-cent loss, and raised its 2001 profit estimate to 11 cents a share from 7 cents.

Hambrecht reiterated its "strong buy" rating and $80 price target on VerticalNet shares.

VerticalNet were down $3.13 to $29.50 in early trading.

SG Cowen also boosted VerticalNet, changing its 2000 estimate to a loss of 78 cents from a loss of 68 cents and its 2001 estimate to a profit of 10 cents a share from its previous break-even prediction.
