From the European front: The heat is on to upgrade CATV networks in Germany. As you know telcos had to sell their cable TV interests as per the EC directive. Telcos didn't invest in upgrading their networks because they were going to sell them.

Two things are happening now as a result:
Telcos have a lot of money to invest in other areas and a rush to upgrade the cable by the new owners. Siemens, Nortel, Scientific Atlanta, Barco and Sagem are part of the deal.

Germnay is using the proceeds of the UMTS auction to invest in the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). DB has a plan to invest 6 Billion Euro in the rail network but they face opposition from their workers. New technologies will displace them.
Perhaps ERICY and NOK will sell a lot of infrastrcuiture for UMTS. But them Siemens wil seel a lot of other stuff since there is those proceeds from the UMTS action that will be invested.
