if the truck roll was holding things up we would see a back log in installs in the upgraded areas and there is none.

Do you *know* that? I sure don't.

Self install kits will certainly help most in areas that are newly upgraded. However they will also help in deepening penetration into established areas by getting those people that are too lazy or too busy to deal with waiting for the cable guy.

Will it double the install rate? I doubt it. But *maybe* the first time its available there will be an extra surge. And if they count anyone who has bought the kit as a "subscriber" they just might hit that 3 million (worldwide) target.

Grace:

I believe that we had two disagreements: (1) whether self-install was feasiable, and if so, what would the impact be on subs (you said no and none) and (2) whether the current system of installing subs (i.e., truck rolls with no self install) would get @Home to 3 million subs by YE00 (3 million subs never included international) (you said yes, based upon the premise that enough markets would open in 3Q and 4Q to drive demand).

(1) Self-installation is feasible and, in fact, forthcoming shortly (you were wrong on this point). Self-install's impact will be greater than you think; in other words, it will create demand (you will be wrong on this point) by making it easier for people to install and for other reasons (i.e., Radio Shack deal).

(2) You were wrong with regard to 3 million subs. At least you have the ability to step forward and admit it (unlike your mentor).

I don't know why you need to state that I "still have no clue", when what I've been predicting has come true and what you have been predicting has not.
