i don't think it's that easy. back in '87 IBM was THE market bellwether...it was the stock with the largest market cap, and a then incredible 625m. shares outstanding.
nowadays the market is much more fragmented...one 'leading' stock after the other got shot down...and the one stock that truly telegraphed the market's trouble in advance was MSFT if you ask me...because it was THE leader of the bull market until earlier this year...only once did it fail to lead, and that was during the final blow-off stage.
