>>orders from another Chinese firm to provide 15 million mobile phones based on CDMA by next year.<<

Peter, that is soooo big. This IS the second of the many large purchase orders we have been expecting (the first went to Sawtek for base station (rake) filters).

I read the first sentence of the post about the 550,000 gsm handsets and stopped reading. Thanks Cooters for the great news, thanks Peter for making me read it. I owe you both some cold beers (at the SH meeting?)
best to all.

Pete,

Has to be a typo. Any one particular Chinese company gets to make 15 million CDMA phones. That will be like 120 million CDMA phones for all 8 approved Chinese manufacturers. (very unlikely to have one company get it all)

In that case the Rich Janitor's prediction for future Q price is well understated!!!!

Re : people "blanking out" despite seemingly good news for Qualcomm -- maybe too many people are "bummed out" watching all of their high tech companies' share prices "taken out and shot," one by one.

Apparently now (tomorrow), it is time for the "optical" companies to get ripped to shreds.

Jon.

"Is everyone just ignoring this!

>>The Kosdaq-listed firm said it has also won orders from another Chinese firm to provide 15 million mobile phones based on CDMA by next year.<<

I guess they didn't read the Chiner article either then...... these two stories seem to point to one very large CDMA system in Chiner next yr IMO.....

>>(24 October 2000)

China Unicom confirmed.... that it will build a......(CDMA) mobile phone network based on Qualcomm Inc.’s technology"..........

....The first round of project bidding has already been completed, according to a source at a domestic CDMA equipment supplier........

.....Analysts note that before CDMA development was put on hold this past March, Qualcomm shrewdly licensed a select group of domestic telecom equipment manufacturers to produce CDMA equipment. Estimates suggest these manufacturers have poured more than US$200 million into developing manufacturing capabilities.....

..... When its CDMA networks attain scale, Unicom may sell its GSM networks to China Mobile or another operator to fund 3G build-outs of cdma2000......

..... On Oct. 18, South Korean President Kim Dae-jung met with Zhu and gained assurances that South Korean CDMA manufacturers LG, Samsung and Hyundai will also be included in the build-out.....

..... Many speculate that at least one more mobile license will be granted, probably to China Telecom, which may have the option to choose CDMA or buy Unicom’s GSM networks......

..... "3G is the endgame," says Wu. "The government is finding ways to move to 3G as quickly as possible.".....<<

An order for 15m handsets seems to stretch the bounds of credability (especially when you combine it with the 10m order from August <g>).

From what I can tell, Sewon is an OEM manufacturer. They supply SK Teletech (which is owned by SK Telecom) and a couple of other companies. Here is a press release from them dated Oct 16th. There are couple of more that are dated later on the Korean version of their site.

I have also tried finding a stock quote (such a huge order would cause a run). Unfortunately, Yahoo doesnt have a Sewon Telecom listed....there are 3 different Sewons. The only one whose stock is moving is Sewon Precision whose stock is up 15%.
