I have problem grasping the local Taiwanese dialet. My friend picks it up when he was on assignment there and had no problem. Why? Obviously, his mother tongue is FookKien (FuJian). They were not popular until songs were written and sung in this dialet in the last 10 years or so. This is just my take. OTOH, I can communicate with our colleagues in Korea and Japan although I do not know their languages. They recognize Chinese characters, so they pick up what I mean by reading my Chinese. Their pronunciation of those Chinese characters are just like another Chinese dialet to me. I think the Thai has some of that too although they do not know Chinese. When they count they sound like another lialet to me and numbers are all I can learn in Thai, in addition to some of the commonly used phrases. FWIW, Rich
