With ethnic urban enclaves decaying, and the descendants of immigrants moving to the suburbs, it is no surprise that parishes should also move. That is not the same thing as overall decline. There are plenty of churches of all denominations left in cities, and something like Catholic Charities does not depend on the outreach of individual churches, but is organized on the diocesan level. Many churches have taken on tasks like day care, and frequently run soup kitchens for the indigent, or afterschool programs to keep kids off the streets. It is not that there is nothing there, it is that it needs to expand.......
