Albert,

There are minor manufacturing variation in the transistors which usually give a speed distribution of around 25% or so.
The unit distribution is a bell shaped curve, with majority of volume close to sweet spot.

I would estimate PIII's speed distribuion of around 850Mhz in Q4 with speeds as lows as 700Mhz and as high as 1Ghz. This seems to fit Intels product line as well.

AMD has a clear lead and their sweet spot may well be at 1Ghz+ in Q4.

Intel had originally been expected to offer 1.3Ghz plus devices. Now they are gonna start at 1.4Ghz and are publishing roadmaps 1.7Ghz for Q1 and 2Ghz for Q2 2001.
What this CLEARLY means is that sweetspot is NORTH of 1.4Ghz and some parts will yield well up to 1.7Ghz.

AMDroids are postulating as follows:

1. Intel is gonna stuff half their parts into a dustbin so they can meet a 1.4Ghz launch.

Doesn't seem very credible to me.

2. Intel is doing a panic vapor launch at 1.4Ghz. In fact its a sure sign of poor IPC that they are launching this fast.

Seems like folks not facing up to reality.

3. Mhz doesn't matter anyway.

Seems like folks have forgotten reality and history.

4. Intel is congenitally dumb and can't manufacture anything.

I think Intel has been dumb. They may well be coming out of the rambus daze.

BTW, i just bought a bunch of Intel at 42 1/2 this morning.

Seems like a good buy ahead of PIV launch.

regards,

Kash
