...the Duron machines by the big OEM's are ridiculously overpriced

Could it be that the OEMs are pricing by following a price/performance model rather than a price/cost one?

Petz <Dave, I saw the same thing -- the Duron machines by the big OEM's are ridiculously overpriced, selling for twice the price of building it on your own or buying from a small shop.>

Thanks for acknowledging. I just did a quick online price comparison of Durons (anywhere) vs PIIIs from Dell and Gateway and found again that you can get a similarly clocked PIII from Dell or Gateway for about the same as a Duron. After the freebies they throw in with PIIIs, they're sometimes cheaper.

To me it's a big double-whammy. Not very many Durons, and most of the boxmakers with Durons are still charging a premium because there are so few lines out there. Maybe for overclockers?

I'm a bit worried about this quarter. I think Fidelity was pretty smart to have sold when they did. I'll bet they load back up in January 01. But what worries me the most is that even a die-hard droid like myself may sell some AMD for tax purposes - there are many out there less attached than myself.

Regards,

Dave
