If I didn't approve of harm, why was I doing it? I'm likely to be judged in the future by a different context, so I should make sure I'm consistent. I don't tell my kids silly things that aren't logical. In the late 18th century it wasn't universally thought that being dark skinned necessarily made you less worthy of rights. I can see empirically now that minorities that aren't doing well in my society test lower. That is undeniable. I know when I meet minorities of similar socioeconomic background I have a resonance with them that I lack with people of the same skin color but who are ignorant. My prejudice stems from the apparent benefits of education. I don't know why reading the thoughts of others makes one a better person but it does. It tends to be a bigger effect in people who have gone to universities simply because the area of breadth has been forced upon them and they probably HAD to study some things that may not have interested them. However, with that said, I have no doubt that a self-educated person who made the effort to learn a variety of things, irrespective of the latent interest, would benefit similar to that of someone who when to a university. I'm an elitist, but at least I admit it. But I think that is okay. It is also a responsibility, IMO, to make sure that society doesn't get too locked up in their mythology. When one believes their mythology too strongly, things get bad. Religion and politics are both guilty of this type of polarization arising from an unjustified adherence to their mythology. I see it on political threads where people see Cultural Revolution and the anti-communist activities of the Army-McCarthy hearings as completely different things. Tolerance based upon a principle of demonstrable harm seems to work the best. Unless there is demonstrable harm, no law should be made. Any law should be held up for question periodically. Some laws might have 20 year lives, but others should only have 5 year lives. This would take care of many problems but I'm sure would be unsettling for a lot of people.
