I completely agree with your concerns regarding the methodologies of the survey(s). As I stated in my post, without the number of respondants alone, we can not infer much without taking some liberties.

You have to also remember that the audience for these surveys is approx. 600,000 deep (the site now boast over 1 million registered users). That's a fair number to calculate if they were to make the actual numbers public.

Again, these people are working with the products - they are techies (with a few CIOs and management types tossed in). Traditionally, Novell has had stronger than usual support in this area (from those in the "technical trenches").

One can infer good things about Novell's market position from these surveys. You can also infer bad things as well. I see some good opportunities for Novell to expand their marketshare and add to their revenues.

The strangest feeling I get is that the site has more articles and topics for discussion on say MSFT than it does Novell but the surveys seem more positive "for" Novell than anything else. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it here....

In any case, I would say these surveys are at best, informal ones.

With all due respect to Novell, "leveraging that installed base" is simply not enough. The LTIB model is-- again (trying to avoid Scott's "straw man" defense (no offense Scott, but you do do that)) I will concede that there are a couple of exceptions-- nothing but incremental revenue. The Netware 6 rev (I don't honestly consider it a new release) is generally not strategic to most of the installed base.

I'm not going to try to play armchair quarterback. I don't know what's best for Novell. Business execution sucks, that's for sure. But, there's no doubt in my mind that much of Novell's R+D is literally years ahead of the market. It's an incredible and saddening dichotomy.

To think what Ray Lane could have done at Novell... Novell could have been another Oracle, bigger than Oracle. Stewart Nelson and Rich Nortz are not the guys to lead Novell to the promised land.

I do miss flying on the jet :)
Coach sucks!
