Jenna, the beauty of going short is akin to what Steve Jobs said when his first child was born: "It's like discovering the color green for the first time." There are some very good traders who go long only, but once the experience of shorting is under your belt, one seems to be able to look at the market more objectively knowing that it is possible to make money either way. The market these past few days has been a classic example of playing both sides.

One of my close friends likes to tell me the story of how his father taught him to play soccer with an equal emphasis on using either leg with equal ability. As a result, he became a very good player.

For some, shorting may first seem unnatural (especially with the complications of shorting on an uptick), but if you keep your position sizing rules and take advantage of a down market, you can get a lot of experience and it will become second nature. One should be able to put on a short with equal ease.

Regards,

WS
