"houses" have no ability to engineer anything...can't force any "little guy to sell", unless of course he is on margin, or doesn't understand his own risk tolerance and aversion.

That is exactly why they do have the power. Fear!

Anyways, so we have a difference of opinion on what causes these moves. They still happen, and at least we agree that times like these are times to look for bargains.

ed...perhaps they can't directly, but the psychology generated by their FUD has a definite impact.

Today, IMO, is a textbook example.

Yea,

you are probably right.

The market is a real sanctified arena where everything is above board and the houses would do nothing to take our little shares away from us, now would they?

Gee, I can't imagine how I knew the Optical area alone would get creamed and these little old Houses would leave INTC, MSFT, ORCL and others alone with the Naz down damn near 200.

Yep, I'll just have to change my thinking on the Houses theory.
