Brazil announces Internet access project

Brazil's government announced an initiative Tuesday by the Science and Technology Ministry
to increase Internet users from the existing eight million to 36 million by the end of 2003,
Agencia Folha (Brazil) reported.

One of the goals is to connect 73,000 schools to the Internet. To encourage Internet access
for a wider audience, the government also plans to install Internet kiosks throughout the
country.

Expected investment is $17.6 billion, of which $260,000 forms part of the Science and
Technology Ministry's budget. The rest of the capital will come from the private sector and
non-profit organizations.
