Italy To Turn Over Wanted Financier

ROME (AP) - An Italian court on Tuesday granted a U.S. request for the extradition of financier Giancarlo Parretti, who is accused of defrauding investors of $1.5 billion in a series of Hollywood deals.

Parretti's lawyer, Caroleo Grimaldi, said the ruling, handed down by a court in Perugia, would be appealed.

A federal indictment in Los Angeles accuses Parretti of 53 counts of fraud, conspiracy and other charges in the 1990 purchase of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and other deals.

Parretti has been in Italy since 1997, when he was convicted of perjury and evidence tampering in an MGM-related lawsuit. He left the United States before he could be sentenced.

He was arrested last year at the request of U.S. officials and released eight days later.
