It was clearly evident to us during our burn-in test for 48 hours why the Heatsink and Fan has AMD approval when you consider how cool to touch the processor was. Gigabyte of Taiwan manufactures the Motherboard included as part of the NPRP system. The GA-7ZM (See figure 2) is produced in a Micro-ATX form factor and is based around the VIA KT133 chipset, which consists of the VT8363 North Bridge Controller and VT82C686A South Bridge Controller. The VT8363 controller support up to four banks of PC 133 SDRAM and Virtual Channel RAM (VCR) fully populated to 2.0GB, with full AGP v2.0 capability for maximum bus utilisation including 1x, 2x and 4x mode transfers, SBA (SideBand Addressing), Flush/Fence commands, and pipelined burst. In addition the chip supports enhanced PCI bus commands such as Memory-Read-Line, Memory-Read-Multiple and Memory-Write-Invalid commands to minimise snoop overhead. The VT82C686A integrates all system control functions such as ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface); the chipset also supports the Ultra DMA-33/66 IDE transfers. The GA-72M can support up to 133MHz FSB, memory support is via 3 168-pin DIMM sockets to a maximum of 1.5GB. In terms of expansion you are somewhat limited with 3 x PCI, 1 x AMR and 1 x AGP slots. The IBM Hard disk supported ATA/100 but the onboard controller was only able to implement ATA/66, but did have the facility to hook up 4 x USB peripherals. In terms of performance the Gigabyte faired well considering the lack of ATA/100 implementation and the "Simple" AMI Bios supplied with the system, implementation of clever bios tweaking techniques were out of the question. The GA-7ZM is manufactured to ensure stability and is for the non-enthusiast user. Leadtek of Taiwan manufactures the Winfast GeForce2 GTS (see figure 3) Video Card that was supplied and is renowned for it's performance by the awards it has won. This is no small feat considering the competition it faces from similar branded products. The board was populated with 32Mb DDR memory and turned in a fine set of results in our 3DMark 2000 test. The Hard disk supplied was one of our favourites the IBM DTLA 307030 - 30.7GB ATA/66+ (see figure 4), 7200rpm drive which supports the ATA/100 specification and is the same model we use in our labs for most of our tests.
