why do you castigate believers for not behaving ethically? For the same reason that I criticize the pope for maintaining silence on the issue of Nazi atrocities, but not the US government of the time. The US government of the time had not set itself up as God's billy club, the absolute and infallible arbiter of morality. Those who declare themselves to be morally infallible hold themselves open for castigation when they don't live up to their chest-beating. The sanctimonious are always more vulnerable.
