There are two choices-- cdma-2000 and w-cdma. granted, QCOM will get royalties on both (although it makes sense that qcom gets a little less on w-cdma). but spinco will not be AS profitable with a w-cdma standard over a cdma standard. There is a lot at stake and that is why NTT DoCoMo and Deut (however you spell it) Telecom are spending way too much to buy influence over US and Korean carriers.
