A clarification re: the TAAS tests--

AS is implying that here was some giant clandestine conspiracy headed by GW in the prepping for these tests. This is ridiculous. AS obviously has no experience with Texas schools or the TAAS administration.

There is nothing sub rosa about how the teachers prepare the students prior to the test date. EVeryone is quite aware of what's happening. For a couple of weeks before the test, the teachers administer practice tests for a period every day and review to make sure that the required material has been covered. I think it's stupid and a waste of time, as do many teachers, but it is a typical bureaucratic response to any type of accountability demand.

It is no different than prepping for the SATs-- learning HOW to take the test. At least in practicing the skills, particularly math, the basic skills WERE reinforced. THe tests are changed yearly. It wastes time and teaches to the test, to which I object because I don't consider it the most productive type of learning, but it has hardly been a malevolent deceptive secret, and it would surprise me if during the initial indepth three year study that preceded this last one, this aspect of the test and its measurement had gone unnoticed.
