Now suppose we had a belief system in which the central tenet was insistence that everything be questioned? Fanaticism would thus be impossible, since the moment a person accepted any belief without question they would violate the central doctrine of their faith.

So, we get into the zeal of having no zeal! This is one of the things that I liked about Tibetan Buddhism. It has as one of its tenets that all things true are part of The Truth. Questioning must be part of finding truth. I don't see how it can't be.

I like it, God as a question mark.

It is, in fact, pretty much the way I was raised by my atheist parents.

? bless you. And Zeus be with you, too, of course.

And good night, all.

Steven if a person has a real faith that person would feel they could move mountains. Some might call that person delusional, but he'll never need Prozac. Is it delusional for a business person or lawyer to be addicted to the adrenalin rush of the next big kill? A religion you never criticize would call this Nirvana, which I believe means the extinguishing of self, i.e. living for what you love or believe in or value.

If you really believed and had faith you would jump naked into battle with just a knife in your hand like the first Roman accounts of the Celts. Or the Arab who straps 100lbs of explosives and marches into enemy territory. I have read accounts of these bombers that say they are absolutely serene, people say they see an aura surrounding them.

There are no question marks where faith meets sky.

As Federico Smartico might say..

get that knife Steven...

Peace.

GO!! GO!!

No Steve, they wouldn't need to wait that long since the belief system that they stated with must also be questioned. This is the big problem with being absolutely agnostic, it is self defeating.

According to Geisler; " Total agnosticism is self defeating because it assumes some knowledge about reality in order to deny any knowledge of reality."

In other words, if you claim to know that nobody can know anything, then you know at least one thing for sure. They could also simply be (and frequently are) fanatical about questioning everything. Persecuting all those who have the temerity to question the proposition "that everything be questioned".

Good evening, or whatever time it is over there. What is the time difference from the west coast?
