It's insanely late and I have an early presentation, so I'll keep it brief and get back to you on this topic tomorrow or later in the week.

Did you happen to read the GbE article in the October 2000 Business Communications Review? It's a must read, IMO.

Nortel, and what has now become known as "the old world" SONETites, would prefer to think in terms of muxing the four 2.5 Gb/s (OC-48) streams, like you say. [Although I don't know how much longer that characterization of NT could be considered valid.]

On the other hand, and according to BCR and others I've spoken with, Cisco and their ilk (the new world?) would be loathe to do this, preferring other options.

But that is one of the aspects of the 802.ae that is worth noting: There are umpteen options and implementors of it are relatively free to pick the ones they want and need. With one caveat: It has to be compliant at the interface.
