<< but there is no reason whatsoever for not releasing 1.6 and 1.7 GHz parts (if those parts were available) >>

According to the roadmap the 1.7 was coming in January? (or was it Q1?) Either way, it's coming pretty fast, so maybe they just want to release with some head room. Why beat AMD by 500mhz when 200 mhz will do fine. I bet AMD could have launched a 700mhz athlon when it first came out, but they didn't.

Jozef,

re:"This would imply 1.6 GHz center of distribution, and 1.4 to 1.8 would fit approximately +/- 14%, but under this scenario, Intel would have as many 1.8 GHz chips as 1.4 GHz chips (in absence of down-binning).

Given the recent history, how do you explain not launching 1.8, or at least 1.7 GHz chip at introduction? It seems completely out of character of Intel management."

I think we are now getting to the bottom of the misunderstanding.

A device that is sold as a 1.4Ghz part means that its speed is 1.4Ghz at a minumum.

So a 1.45Ghz part must also be sold as a 1.4Ghz part.

As well as a 1.499 Ghz part which must be sold as 1.4Ghz part.

No the volume of parts is scattered between the 1.4 to 1.8Ghz range.

There will be very few parts that will be as slow as 1.4Ghz or as fast as 1.8Ghz.

Remember the majority of parts will be right around the midpoint.

As far as 1.3Ghz or 1.2Ghz speed grades if large volumes are yielding at this speed then there would be very low volumes of 1.5Ghz parts.

regards,

Kash
