RE:"Prior to IBM's intervention, AMD designs owned the microprocessor market and Intel make RAM and calculator chips. Intel was scrappy little company that got a great break and didn't blow it - but this market was handed to them on a platter. To their credit, they took advantage of the gift they were granted"

The choice came down to Motorola and they told IBM they couldn't supply all the chips IBM wanted. "Scrappy" Intel said they could. The chip was the 8088 I believe.
The rest is history...

Dan,<AMD had the 2901, second sourced by Fairchild, Monolithic Memories, Motorola, Nat. Semiconductor, Raytheon, Sescosem, and Signetics.>

You forgot at least one more "third source"
as MinElectronProm of former USSR :) :) :)
I bet a lot of the "bit-slices" are still flying
in space, air, and underwater.

Re: "Just before IBM legitimized the PC, a number of bit-slice processors were available (since, at that time, a single chip was totally inadequate to build a real computer, the CPU was assembled from a number of chips called bit slices)."

Who cares?

Re: "Prior to IBM's intervention, AMD designs owned the microprocessor market "

They owned the microprocessor market ?

Baloney.

Why don't you name about 10 products that used the AMD bit slice processors.
