Japan's Semiconductor Market Likely to Grow 26 Percent: Dataquest
October 26, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Japan's semiconductor market is expected to grow in scale to 5,430.4 billion yen (about US$50.15 billion) in 2000, up 26 percent from the year-ago level.

Mobile phones, low-priced PCs and consumer digital equipment will lead the market growth, according to a forecast made in the fall of 2000 by the Dataquest division of GartnerGroup Japan KK.

Broken down by product, the ratio of memory products is likely to increase. The ratio of memories in the entire Japanese semiconductor market, according to the forecast, will increase from 18.5 percent in 1999 to 22.1 percent in 2000.

The growth will be attained through increases in the memory capacity of PCs and the memory prices that soared between last year and this summer.

Japan's semiconductor market makes up 22.0 percent of the world market in 2000. This ratio compares favorably with Europe's 19.4 percent but poorly with 33.1 percent of the Americas and 25.5 percent of the Asia-Pacific.

The future growth rate of Japan's semiconductor market is likely to be more moderate than those of other areas, the forecast says.

Japan's average annual growth rate between 1999 and 2004 is expected to be 12 percent, the second lowest growth among the four major regions of the world -- the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Japan and Europe.

In 2004, the scale of the Japanese semiconductor market is expected to be 7,882.2 billion yen.
