QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces 1xEV High-Speed Data Chipset and System Software for Handsets; MSM5500 Solution Supports World-Leading 2.4 Mbps Data Transmission

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 2000--QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), developer of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the MSM5500(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software, a high-capacity and high-speed wireless data solution that supports the industry-wide 1x Evolution (1xEV) standard, capable of supporting peak rate transmission speeds of up to 2.4 megabits per second (Mbps) for wireless data communications. The MSM5500 solution, which also supports cdma2000 1x as well as offering backward compatibility with IS-95 CDMA systems, provides wireless device manufacturers the most advanced, feature-rich solution available for high-speed wireless Internet services. It also provides wireless operators with the easiest and lowest cost migration path to high-speed data capabilities.

The 1xEV standard evolved from Qualcomm's development of High Data Rate (HDR) technology. 1xEV uses a spectrally efficient 1.25 MHz channel to provide a peak rate data throughput of 2.4 Mbps on the forward link. This technology will provide the lowest cost per bit of any existing technology for wireless high-speed data transmission.

"Our MSM5500 chipset and system software will be a significant enabler for the wireless industry to truly place the Internet in the palm of your hand," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT). "Wireless device manufacturers are already working on products, applications and services that utilize the capabilities provided by 1xEV and our new solutions. The results will be the creation of a ubiquitous, high-speed mobile Internet lifestyle, allowing any type of information to be accessed anywhere at any time by any device."

The MSM5500 chipset and system software includes the full feature set of QCT's MSM5100(TM) chipset, providing Bluetooth, gpsOne(TM) and SnapTrack(TM) position location capabilities, and multimedia features such as Qtunes(TM) MP3 player software and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) MIDI-based multimedia software. In addition, the MSM5500 is designed to take full advantage of new Moving Pictures Expert Group-4 (MPEG-4) video and other advanced features offered by the MSP1000(TM) chipset and system software for fast development of tightly integrated smartphone, automotive and other Internet appliances. The MSM5500 solution also incorporates dual-receive chain diversity that enhances a device's data throughput.

The MSM5500 chipset will be offered in a 0.8mm ball pitch 208-pin Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) package with operating voltage of 2.5-3.0V. In this package, the receive diversity is multiplexed through the keypad and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) pins. This configuration is MSM5100 pin-compatible to enable rapid development. The diversity-receive functionality configuration will also be packaged in a 0.8mm ball pitch 320-pin Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) package, where the diversity pins are dedicated.

Samples of the MSM5500 chipset and system software are expected to be available during the second quarter of 2001, with production quantities expected during the third quarter of 2001.

Looks like Rambos made money. That's great! If this market were a person, it would have been sent to the rubber room long ago. I'm feeling better about it now that some of the air got let out of the momos.
