Tony H - Greenspan knew what he was doing - he warned in the SUMMER of 1999 to the Senate Banking Committee that speculative bubbles are only recognized in retrospect once they have collapsed. No one listened. Nor did the investing/trading/speculating public listen to his between the lines arguments against speculation, shaky business models, blank cheque underwriting, and 'the wealth effect'. Still no one listened when Greenspan suggested a willingness to risk a minor recession to alleviate tight labor markets and threat of inflation, to "err on the side of restraint". It was all there in his testimonies. But no one listened. He gave ample warning. Cycles are cycles and Greeni told us all it was coming.
