I hate to see this politicized because both parties are responsible for it. Reagan ramped it up to historic peace-time rates in his budget, but the House passed it! So, no matter which party you affiliate yourself with, you'll be screwed if you rely upon your savings, and both parties will be the ones responsible. Inflating the money supply (printing dollars) is only one of the ways that economies can cut real valuations.

There is asset inflation right now. When you have a 50-100% greater PEs than historic valuations would indicate, you've got to figure that we're already there. Add in to that record low dividend returns there is nothing to keep people from selling their stocks for food and gas money.
