TISC makes cross-Strait connection with investment in cellphone factory

(24 October 2000) The Taiwan Strait is a little narrower now that a major Taiwan-based investment firm has pledged capital for a mainland cellphone factory.

Zhang Pingzhao, president of Taiwan International Securities Corp. (TISC), said his company would invest US$20 million in mainland China to build the Dingxun Cellular Phone Plant.

Zhang made the statement in an interview on Oct. 18. The plant will manufacture both global systems for mobile communications (GSM) and code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular phones, reports the Oct. 20 Jisuanji Shijie Ribao (China Computer World).

Zhang said that apart from establishing the cellphone plant, the group might also cooperate with Changhong, the largest electrical home-appliance manufacturer in China.

He pointed out that the growth of mainland China's cellphone market was growing fast and that many foreign businesses had already invested in mainland China.

Considering the imminent entry to the WTO, he felt that Taiwan authorities should study the policies regarding investments in mainland China by the cellular phone industry as early as possible so as not to miss any business opportunities, the story said.
