I think that is the best way to look at margin. It's a trade off. On one hand it greatly increases your BUYING POWER(of course well timed LEAPs can also do this). On the other hand it great decreases your STAYING POWER (and with it greatly increases your anxiety level and your ability to stay within your *methodology* of trading).

When the market is going up (i.e. a bull market) you need more BUYING POWER than you do STAYING POWER. With a bear market the opposite is true.
