I agree. Even though overall telecom capex spending may go down, spending on optics (which represents a relatively small segment of overall telecom spending) will probably still grow at a healthy rate.

This could help explain why JDSU and SDLI continue to project strong growth, despite projections of overall decreased telecom expenditures.

The only thing that doesn't fit with this scenario is the weakness in NT and LU. Perhaps everyone else is taking market share from the Big Two. That's certainly the case with Lucent. Nortel's weakness is much more troubling to explain.

I attended a presentation by the fund manager of two ML growth funds and he noted that he started dumping his NT in late September and was completely out a couple weeks ago. Some of his concerns were the reliance on telcos as opposed to corporate business and the increased amount of financing NT was providing to close deals. At least one NT competitor apparently suggested that NT was among the most generous with financing. He was bullish on CSCO.
