Compaq to Voluntarily Recall and Replace Select Armada E500 and V300 Battery Packs

PR Newswire, Friday, October 27, 2000 at 10:02

/FROM PR NEWSWIRE DALLAS 888-776-3971/ [STK] CPQ [IN] CPR [SU] -- WITH LOGO -- TO BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY EDITORS:

Compaq to Voluntarily Recall and Replace Select Armada E500 and V300 Battery

Packs

HOUSTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program for approximately 55,000 battery packs used in Armada E500 and V300 notebooks. These battery packs can short circuit, causing them to overheat, release smoke and possibly catch fire. The battery packs were distributed worldwide in notebooks, as separate options, and as replacement spares.

Compaq customers affected by this recall and replacement program will be eligible to receive two free battery packs for each recalled battery. There will be no cost to Compaq customers for the recall and replacement program.

The computer industry has recently experienced several battery recalls by other computer manufacturers. Compaq believes that this recall is unrelated to any other in the industry.

Compaq recently identified a defect in one battery pack that was manufactured between June 2 and July 10, 2000. This failed battery pack overheated and released some smoke, damaging the notebook computer. Although there has been only a single failure reported, Compaq and its battery manufacturer consider this defect a potential risk due to the high levels of heat and possibility of fire, and is taking these proactive measures to ensure the safety of Compaq's customers.

The recalled battery pack can be identified by a date code and serial number on the white label to the right of the battery connector. If the Armada E500 or Armada V300 contains a battery pack with one of the following date codes and serial numbers, please contact Compaq immediately for free replacement batteries.

-- TCGK 00001- 10500

-- TCGK 20001- 21800

-- TCGK 40001- 83100

-- TCHK 40001- 44700

Based on the nature of this issue, Compaq is requesting customers to immediately discontinue use of the recalled batteries by discharging the battery, removing the battery from the notebook, and ordering the two replacement batteries offered through the replacement program.

For more information on the recall and replacement program call Compaq at 800- 889-7613, or go to our battery recall Web site, compaq.com.

Please note: This recall and replacement program only involves the specified batteries, not the notebook computers themselves.

Duke - Rosen does not have that many shares. I can't find the reference now, but I had in some notes that Rosen held $35M shares. I also had a reference to Rosen holding 2% of the shares. I think those are about the same number... and I can't think of any reason why Rosen would sell, it's not like he needs the money.
