Amazon counts $96 million of investments in other dot coms as cash. Even as "marketable securities" these are of questionable value, since many are going out of business, and if Amazon tried to sell the stocks, they would tank. That is, Amazon could never convert them to cash at their current valuations.

I don't either. I found it unual initially until thinking of Mr. Foster not having nearly the control.
