It happens to so many. Options are much more complex then getting the direction right. Next time you decide to buy, you've got to look the value of the implied volatility.

Good option traders SELL high vol and buy low vol (if appropriate). It's like selling overvalued, and buying undervalued. Options around earnings events typically increase in price for obvious reasons. Fear and Greed.

I sold risk (GREED) knowing that even if JDSU report was killer, the risk would abate and I could buy them back for the less or the same even with the stock up dramatically.

It's exactly what happened.

learn the advanced options stuff at your own pace.
