We (NTT) want to have 150,000 (wCDMA) users by March 2003.
----------

No disputing it - NTT is technology king of wCDMA. They are ahead of Europe in its development.

Spunky Keiji didn't have the heart to even discuss access speeds. 64KBS may be a wet dream.

How will this help their immediate capacity problems?? It won't.

After all their hype , this is pathetic.

They're beginning to backtrack a full 7 months before the prom? Is this the first of many steps in talking down expectations?

Gilder is beginning to appear prescient in his wCDMA statements.

DDI/IDO must love this.

And Operators won't stand for it.

Yes, I realize this diminishes prospects for wCDMA royalties soon. But prospects are growing that CDMA2000 may sweep the series. Perhaps there will never be royalties from wCDMA?

Hey, just to give you a perspective, we had 150k users within 6 months of rolling out service on CDMA in 1994/5. There is already more than 150k users of CDMA in China TODAY on a market trial basis. If they REALLY expect to have something soon, then having 150k users in 4 years from now is nothing more than a small glorified market trial, one in which they could conceivably fund all by themselves and really have NO market influence what so ever. 150k handsets is like the monthly inventory float that Qualcomm handset division used to have with the carriers. On a grand scheme it is just about NOTHING. Why waste your time on a service so far out that has no market value?

Just proves that Marketing FUD is most times overblown.

Follow up on NTT DoCoMo article about W-CDMA roll-out. I was unsure of who Keiji Tachikawa of DoCoMo was, it is hard to keep everything straight. He is President and Chief Executive of NTT DoCoMo, there is no higher source. From the DoCoMo website, a short bio was linked to an article from Business Week, businessweek.com
