Conservatives seem to believe that outside the military the national government shouldn't really have anything to do with our lives except they want to force their brand of intrusive morality on us all. They consider the government to be separate from the people. That is, the government's debt is not our debt. But they consider the government's land heir land there for the plundering by special interests whenever there's private money to be made. Ironically, conservatives are not fiscally conservative (at least not in recent memory). Seeing the government's debt as something separate from our own they have few qualms about increasing it, letting their partisan buddies loot the public wealth to increase it then welching out on those debts and pushing them off to future generations. Conservatives believe there should be no special treatment or help for the poor except through private charities. And also plenty of tax-breaks for the rich so they can avoid paying what working people pay. But conservatives are rarely very charitable. Cheney is a perfect example.
Though he owes all his great new wealth to government contacts he is selfish and cold-hearted. He gives 1% to charity and makes no apology. The big philanthropists are usually liberal people. Conservatives are also wedded to the old military-industrial economy nomatter how out-dated those ideas have become. Pollution is seen as a right and a necessity. Regulations for the common good are seen as infringements. Lawsuits against corporations are seen as standing in the way of free enterprise even when a big rich company steals or harms an individual with few legal resources. Conservatives think people should be locked up for a little marijuana but allow industry to pollute and destroy entire environments and poison children and nature.
Conservatives are dismayed when a more liberal administration creates the greatest economy and stock market of our lifetimes. They refuse to give credit and tell us it had nothing to do with government or was created a decade earlier when they were in charge. Conservatives have an Us against Them attitude. They're happy to give secret military assistance around the world to protect US corporate interests but when it comes to slaughter and genocide they do not believe we should lift a hand to stop it. They try to make bankrupt old communist countries like Cuba and North Korea into scapegoats and threats though these countries can barely afford to feed their people. Yet they are willing to spend hundreds of billions on weapons systems to defend us from these imaginary threats. Mainly because fat defense contracts will go to their contributors.
Meanwhile they call liberals anti-American and anti-patriotic because they do not embrace the old Cold War pro military-industrial attitudes which have become largely out-dated, unrealistic and ineffective. That is why they wheel out old generals to campaign for them to try and remind voters of "better" days, of former glory, and also criticize the new military as not strong enough even though it is plenty strong and dominant globally.

I know many conservatives especially their women are really part-liberal or moderate but to me Bush and especially the people behind him who will really be running the country if he is elected (because I consider Bush a mere front-man) are backward-looking and a lot more dangerous than the facade they present. You can easily see this deception at work during the GOP convention where the real powers stayed hidden and an imaginary benign moderate to even liberal Republican party was put on-stage.

The GOP knows that most social programs, protections against polluters, womens choice and paying down the debt (more fiscal responsibility) are very popular. That is why they pretend to support such things and try to hide their real record, apologize for past voting records, name-call a lot ("liberal" "big government" "socialist") and try to strike the most macho poses. But it's all pretty phony. The real issue behind all this is indeed class, racial and cultural discrimination.
They're the party of rich white non-progressive men who want to protect themselves from the true evolution of the modern age. As an example they deny global warming exists. Just because the solution goes against their corporate interests. It's backward but it feels safer to them. They are frightened of change and frightened of sharing power and resources. They want to make the rules and continue making the rules for "lesser" people, including women.
But there are many of us who sees through them and know who the real liars are.
