15:09 ET Nortel Networks (NT) 44 3/4 -5/8: Rumors made the rounds on trading floors that company was calling analysts and guiding numbers lower; this appears to have been untrue (and now illegal as well). Also rumors that Goldman was cutting numbers; but Goldman denies this. It appears that the rumors might have stemmed from estimate reductions at Dresdner which simply reflect Tuesday's disappointing report. Perhaps we need a barometer that measures the level of desperation these rumor-mongerers will go to to save their asses. The more false they are and the more widely spread, the more desperate we know they are. Clearly, there are some folks scrambling to save their Porsches. Pat
