Paul,

re: "The chief executive officer of microchip titan Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) said on Friday the U.S. company's long-awaited Pentium 4 microprocessor would be launched in about one month, just ahead of its original year-end target."

A little positive spin never hurt anyone, just ask the folks at SUNW, or Gore, or Bush.

John

Paul,
RE:"The original target was August something...then early October...then late October !!!"

I believe August was yours and Elmers target too.
Just about the time I received word the Willamette had been delayed for a speed redesign a couple of months prior. That was in January so say a couple months earlier...

Jim

Paul, <The original target was August something...then early October...then late October !!!>

I don't know where you got the idea that August was the original publicized target. Willamette taped out very late last year, close to Y2K (interestigly enough). Going from tapeout to production in a little over eight months is asking for a little too much, especially for a brand new processor core w/ crazy features like the long pipeline and the 2x-clocked integer unit.

As you know, Intel often remains vague on specific project release dates because there's no telling what might pop up during the normal development process. The regular pattern at Intel is to be conservative publicly and aggressive internally. August might have been one of aggressive internal targets conjured up by management.
