Many but not all mutual funds years ends are Oct. 31. Thus, they sell the losers to offset previous recognized gains in order to reduce the tax hit to the investors. The wash sale rules apply to mutual funds in the same manner as they do to individuals. If they ever buy back into their losers is a stock by stock question.
