Likewise, when SK Telecom rolls out with W-CDMA, I'm sure that they'll also take their time. However, I expect the carriers with existing GSM networks to move much, much faster. After all, building out the core infrastructure is generally far more expensive, not to mention time-consuming, than merely setting up the air interface; and even in DoCoMo's case, my guess is that their current estimates are intentionally a bit conservative, just to make sure that investors don't get too disappointed come the spring/summer of 2001, as we all that the initial rollout will only be a trial. Once again, the shift from AMPS to digital acts as a good precedent with regards to the speed at which subscribers shifts can surpass all expectations when a superior service becomes available for the first time. Eric PS - Ben, your Chinese theory has some merit to it, but I think that it's just a little too early to start proclaiming that one of the world's largest GSM operators is definitely heading for cdma2000. Did you ever think that this concession on 3GPP2's part might merely be for getting Unicom to use nothing but cdma2000 in new spectrum? Considering the growth that Unicom's core subscriber base is seeing, and the fact that the Koreans for now seem set on abandoning 3x, a prize of this magnitude, by itself, might justify striking such a deal with the Chinese. That is, provided that the royalties granted aren't excessive. PPS - The fact that some of you, for whatever reason, are actually gloating about DoCoMo projecting limited subscriber W-CDMA uptake in the near future, truly does amaze me. I don't know whether it's funny or sad. Either way, it shows that's there's no limits to the extent that a mind will immerse itself in rigid dogma. Here's a hint: in this case, you'll be guilty of blasphemy not by disobeying the holy book, but by following it too strictly.
