My parents and their parents were philosophical free thinkers. I get together at family reunions and once in a while a non-free thinker pops up to our chagrin...<g>

I suspect that it is largely genetic. I do nothing specific to inculcate my children other than ask them to examine ALL consequences, even the ones not easy to see. I ask them to believe me, but don't flinch if they demand a plausible justification to my statements. This entirely depends upon context and delivery.

There is a limit how much or often I'll debate with them; it is my job to set the rules. But, if there are no consequences to letting them stay up, I have a hard time making them go to bed (like Friday nights). They eventually go to bed, frequently on their own at a reasonable hour. There's not a lot of novelty in staying up. My only worry would be upsetting their sleep cycle or occasionally getting alone time with the spousal unit.

That's another good reason for bed: I want it. Don't want the cosmicforce to become a bear.
