Onward to SNIA. A lot of the big names haven't said anything yet, but I think they will. Will new partnerships emerge? What will Nishan say. Not long to wait now...

McDATA Announces Participation in World's Largest Storage Networking Interoperability Demo
Joins More Than Forty SNIA members at Fall 2000 Storage Networking World(R), October 30 - November 1, in Orlando
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDT - news), a leading storage area network (SAN) company, announced plans today for participation in the Storage Networking World Interoperability Lab and Demo, October 30 - November 1, 2000, at the Renaissance Orlando Resort. The Interoperability Lab and Demo is one of the featured events at the Fall 2000 Storage Networking World (SNW) Conference and Expo. Storage Networking World, an alliance between the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and Computerworld, promotes access to the latest information on storage solutions for users, implementers and vendors.

McDATA will be exhibiting both metropolitan and wide area networking (MAN and WAN) SAN interoperability in live demonstrations at the Storage Networking World Conference and Expo. Using products from more than 40 other storage networking providers, McDATA will place its high availability ED-5000 Director at the core of SAN over MAN/WAN configurations to show how Fibre Channel SANs solve customer problems associated with having networked equipment remotely located, over optical distance, from the data center. McDATA's demonstrations will take place in the interoperability labs section of the conference's exhibit hall.

``This demonstration reinforces McDATA's commitment to the customer that interoperability is something we take seriously to ensure that SAN products work cohesively in a complete solution,'' said Jeff Vogel, McDATA's vice president of solutions and systems integration services. ``The MAN and WAN elements of this demonstration are part of our scale up, scale out solutions strategy to broaden the choice of enterprise application-based SAN options for business critical operations such as disaster recovery and the rapidly emerging services provider market.''

SNIA Interoperability Committee co-chairs Tom Clark of Vixel Corporation and Sheila Childs of Storage Provider said the SNW Interoperability Demo will be the culmination of months' worth of work by volunteers representing every segment of the storage networking industry.

``Though only one of several ongoing projects, the SNW demo is obviously the Interoperability Committee's most visible initiative,'' said Clark. ``It is an excellent opportunity to both advance the state-of-the-art in storage networking and to showcase proven applications that solve real problems for IT users today.''

``We wanted this event to feature a good mix of previews of emerging SNIA standards in key technology areas, live demonstrations of market-ready storage networking applications and opportunities for some hands-on access to state-of-the-art solutions,'' said Childs. ``Our focus from the beginning was on showing how storage networks can be used to solve today's most pressing data management problems.''

There are seven sub-themes in the SNW Interoperability Demo:

-- The New HBA API Standard: Emerging technology for enhanced usability
and manageability in storage networks;
-- Storage Management: Advanced techniques for managing multi-vendor
storage and networks;
-- Storage Networks for Everyone: Certified multi-vendor solutions from
the small department to the global enterprise;
-- Storage over the WAN: Extending the advantages of storage networks
through the convergence of campus, metropolitan and wide area networks;
-- The SSP/ASP Solution: The "data storage as utility" vision and some of
the applications that are making it reality;
-- Extended Copy: Foundation for server-less backup; and
-- Storage Network Playground: Hands-on learning opportunities.

``This will easily be the most impressive demonstration of storage systems interoperability ever,'' said Larry Krantz, chairman of the board of directors of the SNIA. ``It is a great example of how the SNIA member companies are striving together to encourage wider adoption and further the development of storage networking standards. McDATA is to be commended for this outstanding effort.''

In teaming with other industry leaders in MAN and WAN interoperable technology, McDATA's industry recognized FabricReady(TM) program continues to answer its customers' demand for cooperative, customized multi-vendor solutions. Part of McDATA's demonstration at Storage Networking World will show that Fibre Channel, running over remote and extended distances, can appear as locally-managed devices to those servers needing access through the optical network. This flexibility enables the customer to perform instant offsite backups from a single server, data replication and migration to remote storage arrays. Users can use their existing storage to full capacity -- regardless of location.

The Storage Networking World Conference & Expo is co-owned and produced by Computerworld and the SNIA. The latest conference program information is available online at www.computerworld.com/snw.
