are you saying you have used three different isp's with this new computer, or are you referring to the old computer?

Susie, if this happens with 3 ISPs and didn't happen with the old computer on the same phone line, then I agree with you: it's probably the modem.

I bought a new hardware modem a couple of months ago and it works well. It's a Hayes Accura V.90 and cost $60.
The old modem worked, but slowed down the pc because it was a Winmodem [they use memory instead of hardware].
