Franks' got a new essay.....

All I Want for Christmas …
November 15, 2000
by Frank Levinson

We need system builders to let go of multimode fiber and Cat5 twisted pair … forever. If we do not do this together, we will hold back our industry and if we do let go in small groups, some of us will lose market share forever to those who aggressively make the move.

So, I decided to use this column to ask for a Christmas present. If you are disinclined to give this present then what follows will simply be a tirade.

We need to move to single-mode fiber and not look back. We should resolve to design communication and computing systems starting on 01/01/01 where the primary link supported is single-mode fiber.

Why? Well in the spirit of a fellow Hoosier, David Letterman, here are my top 10 reasons why you should make the move now:

10. It is the cleanest lowest cost solution for 10 Gb/s. It is the only choice for 40 Gb/s and even this will deploy sooner than you think and be more useful than any of us dreamed … and it can still be low cost in the data communications economic model.

9. It is the best and lowest cost way to do large scale coarse WDM in the near term. It is the only way to do DWDM in the long term. Single-mode fiber it the only way we can scale communications bandwidth from where it is today to more than 500 Gb/s on a single transmission media and still hold the cost models we all depend on to release systems to the commercial markets.

8. Bandwidth scaling in terms of Gb/s is like scaling in MB of DRAM, GB of disk storage, MIPs or MFLOPs of computing power, it is with us for the long term and all of our economic futures are tied to doing it well. If we keep encouraging our customers to install transmission media that cannot scale we will limit our ability to deploy new equipment and therefore we are encouraging our customers to stop purchasing new gear and just be happy with what they have.

7. Single-mode fiber is cool.

6. Single-mode fiber is quantum mechanics you can hold in your hand and allows you to manipulate wave equations using classical manufacturing techniques like molding, machining as well as the modern manufacturing techniques like photolithography, epitaxial growth and thin film deposition. Kind of lets you reach out and connect with Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg and Schrodinger.

5. Single-mode fiber is less expensive than multimode fiber. Today single-mode links, including transceiver costs, can be lower cost than multimode fiber links when the link distance exceeds 150 meters.

4. Single-mode fiber is the only media that could seamlessly integrate networks from the desktop to the entire planet; isn’t this one of the larger meanings of the web?

3. Single-mode fiber is the only optical media that permits in-line amplifiers, in-line wavelength converters, wavelength routers, external modulation and wavelength switching. In fact, using Raman amplification, ordinary single-mode fiber is an amplifier!

2. Single-mode fiber is the only media where thorough dispersion compensation is possible and this is crucial as bit rates expand.

1. It is the only way for us to keep moving towards the dream of computing systems that rival human intelligence.

So, all I want for Christmas is for each and every one of you to adopt single-mode fiber and to encourage your customers to do so as well.

That and perhaps a little less gray hair on my head.

So what do you want from the techno-Santa who knows if you have been naughty or nice? Write me and we’ll see what we can do.
