Paul and all, Intel's boxed server motherboard (SBT2) seen on-sale at Fry's Electronics in Portland. This is the dual-Xeon motherboard w/ ServerWorks chipset that Intel released just weeks ago.

I thought this was very interesting. Usually customers who want dual-Xeon servers go to an OEM like Compaq or Dell. Now people can now put together their own with one trip to Fry's. This to me marks Intel's effort to push dual-Xeon platform components into (relatively) high-volume retail.

Of course, it's going to cost an arm and a leg. The Intel SBT2 motherboard costs about $650, and two 933 MHz Xeons go for almost $1400 (2x$689). Add hefty power supply, big case, SCSI hard drive(s), network cards, etc., and the price definitely adds up.

P.S. - Too bad AMD doesn't sell boxed motherboards of their own. I wonder how successful they will be in pushing their upcoming dual-Athlon platform. <G>
