- I actually think the auctions are a fad Depends what you mean by this. Auctions have been with us for hundreds of years and will continue to be. Some items are ideally suited to be sold on auctions, since the market is so small that there is no other way to reasonable price them. This includes antiques, one-of-a-kind handcrafts and other memorabilia. Right now you can buy sneakers in Ebay. This will pass as a fad, thus the importance of half.com (sp?) which is already owned by Ebay...
