Gary, I really don't want to turn this into a political debate however I have to respond this.

Come on, there are vast differences in language, customs, beliefs, political, and economic structures!

China passed through many danasties and each one of them had different aspect in almost all the categories you mentioned above. Does that change the fact those are the Chinese? C'mon, I believe when ibess said Chinese, he was talking about Chinese ethnic, not refering to any specific regime.

How many Taiwanese (read: non-Kuomingtang) desire reunification? Close to zero!

Again that has nothing to do with Taiwainess being Chinese.

most Taiwanese (80-plus percentage of the total population) speak a dialect that is structurally distinct from Mandarin.

Which is in fact Fujianess, or the so-called Min Nan Hua. Yet again has nothing to do with being a Chinese. Ask Ramsey, who speaks Kongtoness. Is he a Chinese?

Gary,

To make it QCOM related post here. If US gives up Taiwan now, China will more than welcome to give 100 million CDMA subscribers network systems to US or QCOM without any delay. Seriously. Then again US defense contractors and US defense experts will not be that happy at all. One will lose some huge sales contracts and the other has one less card to play against "Red China" - the possible future US number one enemy. (gg) US will also lose its leadership position to be the leader of preaching "democracy". The market value for that position worths more than just a couple of billions. (gg)

You just find one here!!! I agree with ML's point of view. I believe when ibess (ML, It is Ibexx!)said Chinese, he was talking about Chinese ethnic, not refering to any specific regime. Have you been to Fujian yourself to see how many Taiwanese visit that Mar-Zhu birth place and take her shrine home to worship each year. You will be surprised.

Taiwanese do not want to have a reunification not because they do not consider themselves Chinese in general. They do not want to be threaten to reunify, under the current "One China" dictated by that "People of Republic of China", or under the current "communist" system.

The majority of Taiwanese want to maintain the current status until "P.R.O.C." is ready to be a democratic society or "PROC" is ready to be under the "Republic of China" - Taiwan as the remaining renegaded provinces. (gg)

Best,

Brian H.
