AMD has until well past the launch of P4 (assuming Intel doesn't delay its launch until Q2 2001) to decide how to deal with it. " Comment: One year ago, when the "spry Athy" was introduced, INTC's Gelsinger promised imminent delivery of PWeeiii 700's and we all know how that got "notched", I mean "botched" (ref. Bill Jackson)...In the spring of 2000, when AMD beat INTC to 1 gig, we all heard more INTC promises of the imminent delivery of the PWeeiii powerhouses at 1 gig and up, and now that it has become all too evident, and painfully so to INTC staff, that PWeeiii can't compete at this level, we are now inundated with PIV prattle promising "the moon performance"...Given the vaccuous nature of INTC "moon performance" promises over the past year, I'm not sure why anyone would attach a high degree of probability to the PIV "moon performance" promises currently rolling out of the INTC PR machine ever becoming a reality, at least in a competitive sense...AMD in the same period has quietly executed to the point where they have now laid claim to the superior microprocessor across the consumer space from low to high end...AMD has now targeted for 2001 the mobile, workstation and server spaces...Given their success in 2000 in the consumer space, it is no longer a large stretch to anticipate additional successes in the sectors targeted in 2001...INTC's PR machine will need "very large heatsinks" in 2001 if they are to have continuing success in masking the fact that AMD has the superior microprocessor product at all price levels in every space in which AMD chooses to compete...
