In some of those states, as in California, Oregon and Washington, Gore is trying to tilt in two directions at once, going left to try to keep liberals from defecting to Green Party nominee Ralph Nader while trying to compete with Bush for the center.

"He's playing Twister with his arms and legs going in all directions," said California-based Democratic pollster Paul Maslin.

For months analysts, and even most Republicans, thought Bush was doing a head fake when he vowed to make Gore fight for California - now Gore knows it's for real since his California lead is down to 5 points (or less in some private polls).

It looks like a strategic triumph for Team Bush, which is expanding its targets as more and more of Gore's "safe" states look risky.

The caveat is whether Team Bush has overreached - and put its own must states like Florida at risk by going for California.
